Communications “restored but somewhat unstable” following power cut

Civil Protection yesterday declared that “communications are fully restored” following Monday’s massive power cut in mainland Spain.

The Canaries did not lose power, but there were problems with internet and telephone connections that led to the failure of some cash machines, credit card payments and flight delays.

PLATECA, the Canarian committee for civil protection yesterday said that no serious incidents related to the breakdown had been reported, but did not rule out the possibility of “minor incidents, because the communications system is still somewhat unstable.”

Meanwhile, parts of Arrecife suffered a brief power cut yesterday evening, although this appears to have been unrelated to the outage on the mainland.

The cause of the massive blackout on Monday is still unknown although Spanish and Portuguese energy operators have ruled out a cyberattack. Portuguese energy providers have denied that they issued a widely-circulated statement on Monday blaming the failure on “extreme temperature changes”.
